The Capital Ride Scholarship

In 2013, Bike & Build will grant a scholarship to one participant on the basis of need to complete The Capital Ride. The scholarship will engage a young rider from an underserved background in Philadelphia who may not otherwise have the opportunity to participate in the life-changing service provided by Bike & Build. It also will broaden awareness of Bike & Build’s efforts in Philadelphia and the need for increased local resources to address the affordable housing shortage across the country.

The recipient will demonstrate the values Bike & Build seeks to promote in the Philadelphia community: young adults with a passion for adventure and a commitment to serving their community to make it a better place.

Philadelphia young adults, ages 18-25, are encouraged to apply. Download the application here [pdf, 59kb]. All submission directions are in the document.

* Please note: This application will be used exclusively to determine the recipient of the scholarship. It does not constitute entry into The Capital Ride. All regular pre-trip requirements must be completed by the scholarship recipient after selection. If you apply but are not selected for the scholarship, we certainly encourage you to apply for the Capital Ride anyway!

Have other questions about the scholarship? See our FAQs here.

Bike & Build Equity - Fundraising, Sweat Equity, and Training
Once the applicant is selected, he/she will begin two months of “Bike & Build Equity” to prepare for the Capital Ride.

The scholarship will cover the $1,700 fundraising requirement in full. However, the recipient will be required to organize one fundraising event to promote the cause. These events give the rider ownership of their involvement in The Capital Ride and strengthen their ability to advocate for the cause.

In that same vein, The Capital Ride Scholarship recipient will volunteer pre-trip with a local affordable housing organization for a minimum of 20 hours – either on-site at construction projects or as otherwise needed.

Like all Capital Riders, the recipient must ride at least 300 cumulative miles and complete at least one ride over 65 miles prior to orientation.

The Bike & Build Alumni Council, Board of Directors, and community volunteers will be available to participate in each of these events.

Alumni, you can play a vital role in making this project happen.

The 2013 Capital Ride

2013 marks the return of Bike & Build's Capital Ride.  Many alumni and potential applicants of the program expressed a strong desire to participate in the cause, but lamented they could not take an entire summer off of work or school. It is our hope that the Capital Ride’s shorter format will create an opportunity previously not available in our program.
